Our Summer 21 collection brings us full circle – back to Africa, to the most elemental part of KLEED. Our birthplace, our source of inspiration. This part of Africa is where we are totally and utterly ourselves – stripped of the trappings of urban civilization, of the “sound and the fury”, the pollution, the daily grind and stress.
Lamu island in Kenya embodies this most perfect state of renewal. Lamu town is Kenya’s oldest continually inhabited town, and the island is now listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site. A fascinating cultural hotpot of Arab, Portuguese, German, British, Indian and Kenyan cultures and settlements throughout the ages. A centuries old tradition of hospitality, in welcoming traders to its shores.
The colours are dazzling, the people delightful and time takes on another meaning, in the warm Indian ocean breezes, the gently waving palm trees and the cool shadows of the patios and courtyards.
There are few motorised vehicles on the island and over 3000 donkeys help with transportation and heavy work. Lamu has its own Donkey Sanctuary, an offshoot of the UK based charity, which works with the local community to provide treatment to all donkeys free of charge, as well raising awareness of the value of donkeys to the local economy.
Lamu House was our own sanctuary. In the cool shade of its myriad patios, in the kilim covered nooks of its passageways, we renewed our own energies and found inspiration for our Summer 21 collection.
In essence, KLEED’s chic yet contemporary clothes embody how many women today want to live their life – elegant yet informal and supremely versatile.
